Tuesday, July 11, 2006

Tomorrow Molly will spend her 18th birthday in the hospital. Two days ago this seemed like such a bleak prospect. Her physical therapy wasn't going as well as expected and she was getting very depressed about that. Then, Mallory and her mom came by to show Molly Mallory's leveling seat. The first physical evidence of the future for Molly. In a way, it was a little unsettling. But they opened the door for what was coming next. Then Jen, Molly's favorite nurse showed up with lots of cool stuff for Molly's birthday, including a hot outfit from Victoria's Secret. Molly has been wearing clothes for 2 days now and that makes her feel so much better. The teen activities coordinator at the hospital brought in a ceramic bowl and glazes to give Molly something to do and she was thrilled. She worked on that for hours. Her dexterity has returned.
Today, Mary from Vail came to visit. Mary has a hemipelvectomy as well. She is a physical therapist and not shy about anything. She went into great detail about the good and bad aspects of this type of wound. She told Molly that this was always going to suck, but it was her choice to make her life what it will be. She told her that Molly will be able to lead a normal life but it would take work. Molly is no stranger to hard work. Thank you Mallory, thank you Mary. You have given Molly a real perspective and that will help her so much.
So far, our experience with Children's has been really good. The nurses have gone out of their way to learn all about Molly and her needs, which they don't see very often. We thank you for that.
Becky and Janie, good luck and God's speed. Lots of people are praying for you as well. Please keep in touch. We have met so many people in these hospitals who have illnesses as tragic as Molly's that no one knows about. Every night I pray for them and count our blessings.
Katy is staying with Molly tonight. I hope you sing each other to sleep and complain about your stupid parents. Hugs and kisses. Sweet dreams. See you in the morning. Love you both.

Molly, Rocky Mountain Harley Davidson Pizza Night is the 28th, make sure your family comes and grabs a slice, and if you feel up to it, come out and see all the nice Harley's in the circle out front! You can even sit on any bike that you want and get your picture take, perhaps with a "hottie" biker guy? Happy Birthday, keep your strength up, and cherish each day that the sun comes up!

Hello Bob, Bernie, Katy, and Molly, All I can say today is Happy Birthday to you Molly. You are a very special young lady and may God bless you on your birthday and always.
My youngest son has been whining a lot lately. My wife says he's just practicing to become a man. I told my wife last night that we should switch positions. She said, "Fine, you do the laundry and I'll sit on the sofa and fart." So I went to wash my favorite shirt and asked her what to set the machine on. She asked, "What does it say on the shirt." I replied, "Denver Bronco's." She started laughing. What's up with that?
Stay strong and stay cool.

My thoughts are with you. Molly, your mom always talks about how strong and amazing you are...as she should...because you are. :) I just wanted to take a moment to recognize how strong and amazing your mom is as well! You are very luck to have her too! I've attached a link to a site dedicated to helping people with similar injuries to yours. You probably alraedy know about it, but I thought I'd attach it just in case. Happy Birthday & stay strong!

Have a great day. We love you!

Happy Happy Happy Birthday you little studlet!!! I'm so glad to hear of your stupendous progress. You have put all of the ridiculous prognosticators (those who thought you were some wimpy non-swimmer type) to utter shame! They thought you would still be at Denver Health now ~ silly huh?!? All I can say is you ROCK (the mullet too). Have a super-d-duper day today and everyday toots. As far as I'm concerned, you will always be Head Girl.

Love you all tons and buckets,

Molly,

I read this blog daily and continue to be inspired by your amazing progress. My birthday is also today so I'd like to share an excerpt from a book called "The Secret Language of Birthdays" - about those born on July 12:

"People born on July 12 are masters at persuasion. They exhibit a powerfully influential presence in whatever environment they inhabit. Through their efforts many projects get off the ground which might never have materialized." From your mother's description of your perseverance and strength, the above seems to describe you perfectly. The same inner strength that you called upon to become a champion swimmer is a force that you can tap into to deal with the challenges you are now facing.

Hey, if you share a birthday with Julius Caesar, Van Cliburn, Bill Cosby, and Henry David Thoreau, I think you can accomplish anything you set your mind to. You are in good company!

HAPPY 18th BIRTHDAY, Molly!
Today, your special day, was an uplift for us all when Ali & Sim reported -with huge, happy smiles- that you looked GREAT!!!
'Tho you had to spend this day yet in the hospital, it sounds like you're on the countdown of weeks remaining till you get to go home. We know how hard you have had to work to come this far, but that is such wonderful news! As so many have already told you, you are truly an inspiration to us all, Molly.
In addition to our happy bday wishes, we continue to send all good wishes each and every day for both your continued strong mental outlook and returning physical strength. Stay tough.

A very special Happy 18th Birthday to you, Molly Bloom! What a truly amazing young woman you are and an inspiration to many, including myself. You truly are the definition of a winner! When I read your blog,I am reminded of my own family, the love and unwavering strength that Bob, Bernie, and sister Katy radiate. My Mom was one of the ladies from Borrego Springs, CA that helped work on your prayer quilt. My own daughter, Megan, was very ill last summer and she has a prayer quilt also; it is a comfort to her even now that she is better knowing so many prayed for her recovery, and God answers prayer. We are truly blessed to have such unwavering family support!! I have never read a blog until yours; I check it every morning and you continue to inspire me with your courage, strength and perserverence. You have proven yourself a lover of life, Molly! You shall overcome with a grace all your own! Keep up the great work, Molly, and my continued prayers for your rehab to be just as successful.
Love and prayers, Michelle Meissner

Hi Molly,
This is Ms. Utsey, an English teacher at East. I'm not sure if you know who I am but I want you to know you have been in my prayers. I was so happy to hear you had been tansfered to Children's. I have a son who was in a car accident three years ago. He doesn't remember his time at Denver Health, but he clearly remembers his time at Children's. From a parent's point of view, who has been there, this is the best place you could be. It is hard to believe you can pass a day going to different kinds of helth classes each day , but he did it. Some days were easier than others, but they were all well worth it. He is doing fine now. Keep working hard, even when you don't feel like it, it will pay off in the end. It is nice to be able to read you up dates. Hello to your family.

Also, I cannot believe how strong your mother is. I have 2 daughters of my own and it just amazes me how strong and positive your mother is on each blog. This is such a terrible accident, but with your positive attitudes, you will come out of it with flying colors.
Stay strong!!!! Happy birthday. Many more to come!!!
